The Hanged Man tarot card
Major Arcana

The Hanged Man

pause · surrender · new perspective · letting go

Upright Meaning

The Hanged Man hangs willingly, seeing the world upside-down. This card asks you to stop pushing and let a different perspective arrive.

Symbolism

A man hangs by one ankle from a living T-shaped tree, his other leg crossed behind — a calm figure four. A halo glows around his head; his hands are behind his back but he is not tied. He chose this stillness. The world looks upside-down from here, which is the whole point.

Love & Relationships

A pause in the story lets clarity return. Do not force resolution.

Career & Money

A delay is not a defeat. Use the wait to rethink the approach.

Advice

Surrender what you cannot control. Look again from a new angle.

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, The Hanged Man is stuck — a pause that has stretched into stagnation, or a martyrdom no one asked for. Sacrifice is not the same as service. Cut the rope you have been dangling from and take one small step.

Reversed Advice

Stop waiting for a sign. Take one small, honest action and let motion return the perspective.
